Down’s syndrome gives cancer clues

posted 25-Nov-2009

Scientists have identified a link between down’s syndrome and reduced risk of certain cancers.

Down’s syndrome is a genetic condition associated with delays in learning and development caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21.

It has been known for some time that people with Down’s syndrome have a reduced risk of certain cancers forming. New research has revealed an extra copy of a gene on chromosome 21, DSCR1, has been associated with slower tumour growth in mice. It is believed to help slow cancer because it codes for a protein that inhibits the growth of new blood vessels around tumours, starving them of the materials they need to grow.

Looking to the future Dr Kaibaan Hodivala-Diilke a scientist from the University of London said “The next stage is to think about how we might exploit this research to improve cancer treatments”.

This is very interesting> my wonderful nephew Adam has Downs and I have heard there is an increased chance of leukaemia. Glad to know other cancers can be less likely.

i believe that many people with downs syndrome are not getting the help they need from the government. as it is a ressesive genetic condition, much research has been found although none of it proves that people with downs syndrome are more suseptible to help and get on with people better than people with other learning difficulties. some people believe this and admit their child with downs syndrome into main stream school. which sometimes does not benefit the child at all.
