Genetic tests are now available over the internet - no need to contact your doctor.
Genetic tests can help in the diagnosis of serious genetic disorders or diseases potentially leading to treatment preventions or information for reproductive choices. Tests are also offered to promote changes in your lifestyle or to assist in tracing your genetic origins.
Genetic tests are generally offered through a GP or hospital. Before taking the test patients have the opportunity to discuss possible results and what it means to them and their family.
Currently the future of genetic tests is not clear. More knowledge about our genes new technology and people's growing interest in factors that affect their health could mean genetic tests becoming available on the high street.
There are worries about the implications of such readily available tests. Results may be confusing or of little use to you or your family. Some might also give you information you didn't want about your genetic origins or fertility.
